‘No agenda’ on City Council table to pursue Local Government merger

NO CRYSTAL BALL: Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee says he cannot predict when the issue of amalgamation will resurface.

MOUNT Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee says the council has no agenda “on the table” to pursue amalgamation with its neighbouring council.

“Council has no plans or undertaken any discussions regarding the issue of amalgamation,” Mr Lee said yesterday.

He said any merger talks or reform should be driven by the State Government.

Asked if the issue of amalgamation with Grant District Council could resurface, Mr Lee said he did not have a crystal ball.

“You can never say never. It will eventually come up, but I do not know when – I cannot predict that,” the city mayor said.

Mount Gambier City Council instigated an amalgamation push around 14 years ago, which was stonewalled after a landslide vote of Grant residents.

Former Grant District Mayor Don Pegler described the push at the time as a “takeover bid”.

More than 60pc of residents participated in the voluntary survey.
