Lambert endures rough road to championship glory

ON TOP AGAIN: Tom Lambert recently took out the 65cc B Grade Victorian Championship Motocross Title to continue his stellar season.

DESPITE some bumps in the road, Millicent’s Tom Lambert claimed the prestigious 65cc B Grade Victorian Championship Motocross title at the final round in Ballarat recently.

The youngster set his sights on the title after he was victorious in the C Grade Victorian Western Region championship last season.

Lambert claimed the victory by a slim two points, after a DNF in the first race of the opening round caused the results to remain tight.

“I blew my bike up in the very first race, which meant I had a DNF and no points,” he said.

“But it does feel good to now have the championship.”

Lambert not only won the Victorian championship, but also claimed the 10-12 Years 65cc class South Australian title round at Keith on the weekend, while coming third on board his 85cc machine.

“I came first in all three races on my 65cc, but the first one was close because I made a few mistakes,” he said.

“There were 17 riders in the 85cc class and I had three holeshots, but came second in the first race and third in the last two.”

The sandy and quick track suited Lambert’s style, which helped with the impressive results at the state title round.

It was not only a solid day out for Tom, but his sister Emily also had an outstanding run at Keith.

Emily finished sixth overall in the 65cc 7-9 Years Class after three solid races.

She placed ninth in the first moto, before stepping up a gear to cross the finish line in sixth for the two races to follow.

“I was proud of my results, even though I forgot to put it in gear at the start of the second race,” she said.

“I liked the track because it was in a quarry and it was fast and flowing.

“There were two roller sections, which were fun.”

Emily does not allow the male dominance in the sport to intimidate her and enjoys testing herself against the best.

“I like competing against the boys because when they find out they have been beaten by a girl, they do not like it,” she said.

While Emily has become a smoother rider and her corner speed has improved, she hopes to take it one step further when the sibling duo travel to Gilman in Adelaide for the final round of the South Australian titles.

“I would love to get on the podium, but a top five would be good for my first year on the 65cc,” she said.

Both Emily and Tom will head to Gilman on August 18, before heading to Colac for a round of the Victorian Western Regions on August 19.
