STUDENTS across the South East have graduated from the empowering Youth Opportunities program, significantly improving their wellbeing, communication skills and resilience.
It was the second year the program has been provided in the region, with ceremonies held for 54 students at Grant, Mount Gambier and Millicent high schools.
The structured course spans over 10 weeks, with students graduating with 10 South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) points.
The program goal is for students to feel good about themselves and to succeed in building relationships.
“We take a holistic approach tailored to meet the different needs of each individual,” Youth Opportunities regional coordinator Courtney Grigg said.
“Students gain one-on-one coaching and learn to thrive and overcome life’s obstacles to be the best people they can be.”
Ms Grigg said the program was open to all students, from those seeking to improve their low self-confidence to those who wanted to improve their communication skills or simply students who needed a motivation boost when thinking about their futures.
A Grant High School parent talked highly of the program and the positive changes she has seen in her child after her graduation.
“She appears more motivated in making a better life for herself, better choices and has a better attitude,” the parent said.
“I am finally able to to feel more relaxed about what the future holds for her.”
Ms Grigg said the program had been running for 20 years, however had only been offered in the South East a short time.
“During this time we have already partnered with four schools, established a local support group, helped the families of students and in turn the wider community,” she said.
Last year, Youth Opportunities was awarded one of two $100,000 grants from Impact 100, which made it possible to launch the youth empowerment program in the South East.
Coordinators of the program are now looking to the local community to assist with sustaining the program.
“We have had the generous support of the Stand Like Stone Foundation, Rotary, Grant District Council and Mount Gambier City Council,” Ms Grigg said.
“We are looking to also partner with local businesses to create engagement with students so we are able to stay here, engage and be proactive.”
