Transport minister responds to calls to adhere to speed limit promise

THE State Government’s promise to reverse the speed limit on Carpenter Rocks Road and the Riddoch Highway will happen “all in good time”, Transport Minister Stephan Knoll says.

Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell quizzed the State Government for the second time in parliament when the decision to decrease the speed limits would be overturned.

In responding to the question, Mr Knoll noted the independent MP’s “consistent and unrelenting interest in this matter”, but did not directly indicate when the pre-election pledge would be honoured.

“There is a budget process that’s going on and on September 4 the budget does get handed down,” he said.

“I look forward to reporting back to the house and him personally to let him know about when this commitment is going to be delivered.”

Speed limits were cut on eight regional roads across the state last year under the previous Labor Government’s 2020 Towards Zero Together road safety strategy,

Three Limestone Coast roads – Carpenter Rocks Road, Riddoch Highway and Clay Wells Road in the neighbouring MacKillop electorate – saw a default rural speed limit of 100kph imposed.

The State Liberals committed to restoring the 110kph speed limit on all eight roads if elected after March 17 and review speed limits across the state “on a systematic basis”.
