ON ANY given night across our country, more than 17,000 Australian children under the age of 12 and a further 10,900 young Australians aged between 12 and 18 are experiencing homelessness.
It is a growing problem in communities across Australia and more and more people are turning to Vinnies for support.
Recently 23 Year 12 students and two staff members from Tenison Woods College did their bit for the cause by braving the cold, wet weather to participate in the annual Vinnies Winter Sleep Out.
The “sleep out” is an initiative to raise awareness of homelessness by sleeping rough – to walk in solidarity with those who have no place to call home.
Students experienced what it was like to have only a swag, sleeping bag and a simple meal.
They also distanced themselves from technology for the evening.
Students also ran a blanket drive, with donations to be given to Vinnies in the coming weeks.
The campaign encourages members of the school community to learn more about the problems Vinnies and many other agencies across the nation are helping to solve, especially during the long, cold winter months.
