Tenison Woods College students raise funds for inaugural charity day

CANS FOR A CAUSE: Year 12 students Casey, Matthew, James, Daniel and Luke count the cans donated by Tenison Woods College students for their first annual charity day.

STUDENTS from Tenison Woods College have banded together to raise money for local charities as part of their first annual charity day last week.

A total of $4700 was raised from food stalls at recess and lunch, in addition to activities held in the hall by Year 12 students.

The money was divided between the South East Animal Welfare League, Headspace and Sunset Kitchen, which were nominated by each school group.

School captain Evangelia Wichmann said the event was a huge success.

“We are so pleased with the outcome,” she said.

“Every year our school has a motto and this years ours was ‘hands up, help out’ so we wanted to do something to give back.

“We have also noticed a divide between year levels so we thought a day like this would bring everyone together and bridge the gap.”

In addition to money being raised, students also donated cans of food, with 1300 presented for the St Vinnies can drive.

The fundraising does not stop there as students had already raised $2000 as part of the Limestone Coast Relay For Life and have more plans for throughout the year.

“We have organised an event where the boys will have their legs either shaved or waxed to raise money for bowel cancer research,” Ms Wichmann said.

“Year 12 students will take part in the winter sleep out this week, which means we will have to sleep outside in the cold to help understand what it would be like to be homeless.

“Hopefully days like our charity day will be an annual thing as we should always aim to help out others wherever we can.”
