AN ITALIAN-BORN Mount Gambier businessman will rekindle fond memories of his motherland when he arrives at work each day once a vibrant mural of Napoli reaches its completion.

Local artist Phil Clements is placing the finishing touches on his Italian masterpiece outside Gambier Tile Centre for owner Tony Iannella, who was born in the seaside
city.

Mr Clements hoped the perspective piece would catch the community’s attention as soon as people turn the corner into Commercial Street East from Pick Avenue.

“I want people to come around the corner and have their eyes capture it,” Mr Clements said.

“I want there to be a real ‘wow’ factor.”

Anyone who looks at the wall and knows Italy would be able to see the town of Napoli already, however Mr Clements said it would take several more days to refine the work.

“I have probably spent around 40 hours on it so far, so it certainly does not happen overnight,” he said.

“I will probably spend another 30 to turn it into what Mr Ianella desires.”

Mr Iannella’s inspiration to get Mr Clements involved in the project was simple.

“It’s better than looking at a bare wall,” he joked.

“I thought if I painted my hometown it would save me a fortune having to go back every year because instead it is right here.”

As the artwork continued to form in front of Mr Iannella’s eyes, he received incredible feedback about the piece.

“Phil does a great job, he is very particular and takes his time,” Mr Iannella said.

“He gets paid by the hour though, so I have to keep an eye on him.”

Jokes aside, he said he was excited to see the finished product.

“I’m really proud of the work already and I am glad I just gave him the idea and then just let him take it over and do what he thinks with it,” Mr Iannella said.

“It will be great for the people driving past and it is great to see so much of Phil’s artwork in Mount Gambier.”
