A MOUNT Gambier school has thrown its support behind a proposed indoor/outdoor sports and recreation centre for the city and wider region.

Sharing the “20k in 20 days” petition around campus, school students and staff have joined many other residents in backing the project.

Tenison Woods College principal David Mezinec said the college community was enthusiastic about the proposal.

“As a college community which has a high performance sports program supporting 98 students, we enthusiastically support the the City of Mount Gambier’s endeavour to build an indoor sports and recreation facility,” Mr Mezinec said.

“We anticipate the proposed centre will provide multiple benefits across the region.”

He added the college looked forward to strong support from the wider community to progress the project and hoped for a successful outcome.

Meanwhile, the steering committee behind the petition is confident they will have 20,000 names when they present the petition to Mount Gambier City Council on April 24.

“We had a huge response during the first weekend of winter sport with a number of sporting codes getting behind the initiative,” steering committee member Nathan Stratford said.

“There was a strong commitment from members of the Mount Gambier Netball Association and Western Border netball and football clubs.

“We are very happy to announce we have launched an online petition to complement the paper petitions at businesses, schools and sporting clubs across the region.”

Mr Stratford said petitions were now prominently displayed at around 140 businesses in Mount Gambier, Millicent, Penola, Beachport, Nelson and Port MacDonnell.

“Before we launched the online version we wanted sporting clubs and businesses to have something tangible to distribute to allow them to discuss the project with people,” he said.

“We felt that was a more authentic way to go about it and it aligned with out grassroots style campaign.

“The traditional distribution of the paper petition helps people better understand how the facility would benefit the entire region.”
