Furry friends compete in Blue Lake city

PREPARATIONS: Helen Cottier with Ace, Barbara Lightburn with Darcy and Karen Brooksby with Bella and Kiri in the lead-up to the Easter trials at Hastings Cunningham Reserve.

SOME of the country’s best behaved pooches will travel to the Blue Lake city this weekend to show off their skills and compete for new titles.

Hastings Cunninham Reserve will be filled with dog lovers and their best four legged friends for the city’s major competition.

Around 90 people and 117 dogs will converge on the city ready to jump over hurdles, run through tunnels and show off their best behaviour in the obedience, agility, rally and games competitions for the annual Easter trials hosted by the Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club.

Attracting dog lovers from across the country, trials manager Karen Brooksby said it would be a fantastic day for all involved as they compete against the best in Australia.

“We will have five rings set up over the course of the competition with a total of 835 entries in the trials,” she said.

“Our numbers are slightly down over the weekend due to the national competition the weekend following, but we have made up for it with a half day games competition on Easter Monday.”

With judges travelling from Adelaide and Victoria, dog lovers and their fury friends will face tough competition as they work to claim first place.

However, it is not all serious business with catering provided by the local Lions club and a monster raffle on Sunday.

“There are some really great prizes up for grabs and on the Saturday night we will also have a spit roast,” Ms Brooksby said.

“Anyone is welcome to come along and see what it is all about with plenty of seating available.

“However, it is not a place you can just go up and pat a dog, they will be busy competing.”

With perfect weather conditions forecast, Ms Brooksby said they are looking forward to a successful event.

“It is always a lot of fun catching up with other competitors,” she said.

The Easter trials will run from 8.30am each day with the Monday competition finishing around lunch time.
