Early education honour

AWARD NOMINEE: Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre director Clara Walker (centre) has been nominated as director of the year in the Australian Early Education and Care Awards for 2018.

A MILLICENT early learning centre director has been recognised for her work in the Australian Early Education and Care Awards.

The dedicated and passionate leader said she is humbled by the nomination and extremely grateful to be entrusted with leading childhood educators in shaping citizens of the future.

Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre (GSELC) director Clara Walker was recently nominated as “director of the year” in the Australian Early Education and Care Awards.

The awards celebrate leaders and services in communities across the nation that are committed to the growth and development of those in their care.

Although this is the second year Ms Walker has been nominated, she said it came as a surprise and was an honour.

“I am humbled by the nomination and feel extremely grateful to be entrusted with leading our childhood educators in shaping our citizens of the future,” Ms Walker said.

“Each day brings a different experience – as each child comes through the door with their own interests, strengths, experiences and unique culture of which we too learn from.

“Being the director of the GSELC is a role which I am proud to hold.

“The current staff are passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic educators who strive to provide children with the best quality education and care while attending the centre.”

Ms Walker commended the commitment and enthusiasm of her staff, as well as the parents who she said were “supportive and passionate” about the centre.

“My role is made easy because of these wonderful partnerships and most importantly because of the amazing children who attend GSELC,” she said.

“Helping children to develop a positive sense of identity and develop into confident active learners with a sense of belonging is what we ultimately strive for.

“Millicent is extremely lucky to have such an excellent service with support from the Wattle Range Council and along with other local services, the children of Millicent and surrounds have a prosperous future.”

Nominations for the awards closed on March 11 and finalists will be announced on April 19.

State winners will be selected after they are reviewed by the judging panel.

Among the prizes for the winners is a three day professional development event.

At this event, the national winner of each of the four categories will be determined after each state winner has presented to the judging panel their achievements and goals for continued quality improvement and innovation in the early years education sector.

The national winners of each category will be announced at the Australian Early Education and Care Awards Gala Event on June 15 and share in more than $40,000 in training and professional development grants.
