Eight ball: Women cued up for state crown

BACK FOR MORE: Members of the South East Women’s Eight Ball State Carnival 2017 team will be back for another shot at the title this year, including Toni Greenwood, Chris Schembri, Benni Rossmann, Judith Button, Karla Bowd, Pauline McCormack.

THE Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse will be the focus for female eight ball players from around the state this weekend as the Blue Lake city hosts the 29th women’s South Australian Eight Ball State Carnival.

It will be the fifth time Mount Gambier has hosted the event, with teams travelling from Yorke Peninsula, Riverland, Millicent, Murray Bridge, Mannum and Adelaide, along with Mildura.

It means more than 130 players plus friends, families and supporters will head to the region.

A total of 24 teams have nominated, all vying for the honour of being crowned state champions.

Individual players will have an opportunity to try out for the state team, which competes at the nationals in October/November each year.

Previously three players from the Mount Gambier association have made the state side – Chris Schembri in 2011 and 2016, Judith Button in 2016 and Benni Rosmann in 2017.

The Limestone Coast will be represented by 12 players in two teams.

Team one features former South Australian representatives Chris Schembri (2011, 2016), Judith Button (2016) and Benni Rosmann (2017), alongside team manager Pauline McCormack, captain Karla Bowd and Toni Greenwod.

Team two consists of team manager Helen Sampson, captain Jo Walsh, Cassie Starrick – who has played for the Northern Territory State team – Bindi Davis, Sarah Ross and Kaitlyn Kember.

The competition is divided into three groups of eight teams, with each group playing a round robin competition of seven matches.

Matches start at 8am tomorrow and Sunday, with finals kicking off at 9am on Monday.
