Roses in full bloom

DELIGHTFUL DAY: The past five annual open days at Wagner’s Rose Nursery at Kalangadoo have been well attended.

ROSE enthusiasts, aspiring gardeners and families looking for a day out are expected to converge on the popular annual Wagner’s Rose Nursery Open Day at Kalangadoo on April 8.

Now in its sixth year, the day gives people an opportunity to experience the nursery, be inspired to grow roses and enjoy food, wine and roses.

The family friendly day – held at the nursery on the outskirts of Kalangadoo near the Koorine homestead – will again be a major fundraiser for Penola Primary School, with students and parents throwing their support behind the event.

“For the last few years we have had amazing support from the Penola Primary School, with each class presenting a stall of their own, including a cake stand, sausage sizzle and drinks van, whilst the parent club helped out on the gate and with car-parking,” nursery owner Brian Wagner said.

“We’re also fortunate to live in an area that has bountiful produce and our neighbours Kalangadoo Organic Orchards with their apples are one of our most staunch supporters.”

To add to the food stalls available on the day will be a wood-fired pizza food truck, along with boutique cider and beer producers, while Coonawarra’s Grey-Smith Wines will provide wine for sale by the glass and bottle.

“The Penola Scouts will sell cut flowers from our nursery and there will also be hundreds of potted roses, including standards, available for purchase on the day, with loads of special open day deals,” Mr Wagner said.

“There will be plenty of entertainment to keep the kids busy, including a jumping castle – weather permitting – for the younger ones, which frees up parents to really get out and enjoy the roses.”

With early April being an ideal time for roses in bloom, the nursery will be awash with colour.

It will be the first chance for visitors to see the new 2018 rose releases, while also viewing a large selection of yearling and two-year-old rose bushes.

Wagner’s Rose Nursery – spread over 50 hectares – grows over 600 rose varieties for the wholesale market.
The day will run from 10am to 4pm.
