Bowls: Club showdown

Mid Week Pennant 

THE Port MacDonnell Bowling Club had the satisfaction of a guaranteed Midweek Pennant premiership side when its Red and Blue teams went head-to-head in the final on Monday.

With many spectators attending the event, it was the Red team which claimed the honours and the respective title on the day.

On the first rink the Red side of Roma Henderson, Robin Bilney, Kevin Henderson and Joy Bilney were up against Blue’s Lyn Vanderley, Barrie Schmidt, Carol Schmidt and Bob Hutchesson.

The match was a close-fought affair and in an exciting finish, the Blue team were able to take the win on the last end.

The second rink saw Red’s Barb Milstead, Heather Richards, Bill Richards and Ron Cox play the Blue team of Chris Lethlean, Danny Gaut, Reg Fisher and Bart Lethlean.

The more experienced Red team was too strong on the day and defeated the Blue side, despite a valiant effort.

President of the Lower South East Bowling Association Steve Carnellor presented the Pennant flags to the winning side after the day’s play.

Friday Pennant 

Port MacDonnell 60 d Mount Gambier RSL Red 29

WITH Port MacDonnell finishing top of the ladder in the Division 1 Friday Pennant season, it earned a home semi-final against Mount Gambier RSL.

Winning both rinks on the day, the Bay will now progress straight to the grand final.

Barbara Milstead, Jan Dowdell, Joy Bilney and Heather Richards played RSL’s Jenny Bowering, Nancye Wilson, Jenny Waugh and Karen Doman.

The RSL started strong to win the first three ends, but the home team was then scored 17 ends to the RSL’s five to finish with a solid win of 34-13.

On the second rink, Port MacDonnell’s Sharon Perryman, Robyn Burley, Carol Schmidt and Judy Grosvenor played Glenda Dalton, Val Anderson, Maryke Heaver and Veronica Opie.

The Bay team scored the first four ends before the RSL was able to get an end and the home side continued to hold the advantage, winning with an eventual score of 26-16.

Now advancing to the grand final, Port MacDonell’s opponent will be decided when Mount Gambier RSL plays Mount Gambier in the preliminary final on March 16.
