Study opens world of opportunity

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Former Penola resident Taylor Ey will make the journey to America this week to begin an internship in Washington DC as part of his university degree.

FORMER Penola resident Taylor Ey is set to jet of to America this month after being accepted into a dream internship in Washington DC.

Currently studying international relations and economics at Flinders University, Mr Ey decided to apply for the university’s Washington Internship Program following an American politics lecture.

The internship at Capitol Hill, lasting for two months, will see the student work for a member of congress and immerse himself in the United States policy processes.

“We are not sure yet which congress member we will be assigned to as members are currently on Christmas holidays,” Mr Ey said.

The application process for the internship required time and dedication, with Mr Ey saying he was ecstatic when he received the news he had been accepted.

“We first had to write a statement of interest, write a research essay of 2000 words, gather references and fill out endless amounts of paperwork,” Mr Ey said.

Applicants discovered whether they were accepted into the prestigious program a month later.

“We will begin our internship by simply answering phone calls, giving tours and writing letters,” Mr Ey said.

“Following that, what work we do will depend on what member of congress we will work for.”

In his third year of his four year degree, Mr Ey said he had thoroughly enjoyed his course as it provided a variety of subjects.

“We have covered politics, history and economics, so I am excited to put some of those skills into practice,” Mr Ey said.

The student will leave for his overseas adventure this week and celebrate a white Christmas away from home with other interns accepted into the program.

The course will officially begin on January 2.
