RELAY LAUNCH: The Limestone Coast Relay for Life committee has invited the community to attend the 2018 Relay for Life launch event Monday.

THE Limestone Coast Relay for Life committee has invited the community to attend the 2018 Relay for Life launch event today.

The event will be attended by renowned cancer researcher Professor Ross McKinnon and is a chance for locals to find out more about Relay For Life and the important impact the money raised will have on cancer research in South Australia.

Chairperson Brooke Wilson encouraged locals to learn how they can join the fight towards a cancer free future.

“The launch is a chance for us to share our 2018 Relay For Life plans with the community and hear from one of the state’s leading researchers into cancer drug treatments,” Ms Wilson said.

Funded by Cancer Council SA’s Beat Cancer Project, Professor Ross McKinnon’s research focuses on optimising cancer drug treatments and increasing quality of life.

Motivated by the loss of his wife to breast cancer at just 40 years of age, Professor McKinnon understands the negative side effects current treatments can have on those diagnosed with cancer.

“During the 15 months my wife lived with cancer, she experienced major drug toxicities and many ineffective drug treatments,” Professor McKinnon said.

“I am motivated to optimise drug treatments for future generations to avoid others experiencing such unfortunate circumstances.”

Funds raised at this year’s Limestone Coast Relay For Life will support researchers to continue their work and make a real, life changing difference to South Australians living with cancer.

“You don’t have to look hard to find someone whose life has been affected by cancer,” said Ms Wilson.

“Sadly, statistics show us that one in two Australian me and one in three Australian women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

“These are today’s statistics, not tomorrow’s, and with your help we will change them.”

The launch event will be held at the Mount Gambier Community RSL this evening from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Registrations for the 2018 Limestone Coast Relay For Life are now open.

Call Maxine Tuffnell on 0418 838 930 or visit relayforlife.org.au to register.
