Speed limit reduction ‘example of government’s regional neglect’

REGIONS FORGOTTEN: Liberal candidate for MacKillop Nick McBride has condemned the State Government’s decision to drop the speed limit to 100kph from 110kph on eight of the state’s regional roads.

THE speed limit drop on eight regional roads is a further example of the State Government neglecting the regions, Liberal candidate for MacKillop Nick McBride has said.

Mr McBride condemned the decision to drop the speed limit to 100kph from 110kph on roads, including Clay Wells Road, adding that lowering the speed limit alone would not reduce the road toll.

“For too long this State Labor Government has neglected regional SA,” he said.

“Our roads are a shining example of this.

“Lowering speed limits on country roads is yet another example of how Labor is out of touch with rural and regional South Australia.”

The political hopeful called on the State Government to increase investment in upgrading infrastructure on the eight roads earmarked for the 10kph decrease as well as committing to funding local MacKillop roads.

Mr McBride said the State Government needed to commit to funding the second stage of the Penola Bypass, which has been in limbo since 2016 after a $9m Federal Government contribution was rejected.

“Our Federal Member Tony Pasin managed to secure Federal Funding to finish the Penola Bypass but the State Government won’t accept it,” he said.

“Princes Highway is in desperate need of upgrade but the State Government can’t seem to see past the tollgate.”

“With so many local roads in need of upgrade a re-elected Labor Government would mean it’s only a matter of time before these speed limit cuts come to a road near you.

“We desperately need a change of government to ensure those living outside Adelaide are taken seriously.”
