WHAT once was a childhood game has transformed into an opportunity to create change for Glencoe resident and LEGO enthusiast Emma Robinson.
Exploring her creativity and love for LEGO as an adult, the local mother said her passion was again sparked and since then “exploded” over the past few years after volunteering and exhibiting alongside her daughter at events in Adelaide and Melbourne.
Keen to share this passion with those in her own region, Ms Robinson decided to host a similar event in Mount Gambier with a variety of local and visiting LEGO enthusiasts.
She said she was grateful for the generous sponsorship of Empak Homes which made the event possible.
“It is such a great family environment and people get to share their passion for LEGO with others – when children walk into the room and go “wow” it makes the hours of building worthwhile,” she said.
However, not wanting to benefit financially from the event herself she made the decision to use it as a fundraiser for Wet Noses Animal Rescue, another passion of hers.
“I believe if you are going to put on an event for the community there is no point in you personally pocketing the money,” she said.
“I think it is really awesome I can combine my passion for LEGO and helping the animals as well.”
Encouraging anyone of any age to come along, Ms Robinson said people get joy out of seeing the models no matter how old they are.
“Grandparents and parents are able to bond with their children over the LEGO with a range of older LEGO present at the event,” she said.
“LEGO is also often used as a therapy toy, whether that be for autism spectrum disorders or behavioural problems – it is quite popular in that round.
“I hope that I have created something that families really will enjoy with interactive displays as well.”
A school LEGO competition will also be held with students from Reidy Park Primary School, St Martins Lutheran College and Naracoorte, Millicent North and St Anthony’s Catholic primary schools.
All of the schools will individually hold their own competitions in the lead up to the event with the three winning students from each school competing against each other in the major competition at BrickGambier.
The event will be held on September 30 and October 1 from 10am to 5pm at the St Martins Lutheran College gymnasium with LEGO challenges, a construction zone play area, interactive displays and a chance to purchase LEGO.
Entry fees will apply which will be donated to Wet Noses Animal Rescue.
