Community service pride for students

Faith, Caitlin TBW Newsgroup
BRIGHT FUTURE: Faith Monger and Caitlin McMahon were recognised by the Order of Australia Association for their contribution to the community. Caitlin was one of 12 winners of the Student Citizenship Award while Faith was highly commended.

A MOUNT Gambier student has been recognised by the Order of Australia Association for her contribution to her school and the community.

Grant High School Year 12 student Caitlin McMahon was one of 12 South Australian students who received a prestigious Student Citizenship Award from the association.

The awards recognise and acknowledge the special efforts and achievements of young people who contribute broadly and consistently to their communities.

Each school was invited to nominate up to two students from Years 11 and 12, which were then considered by an adjudication panel of association members.

Caitlin volunteers with St John’s Ambulance Service and the Mount Gambier Hospital and currently serves as school captain.

“Volunteering is an amazing way to give back to the community that helped raise you,” she said.

“Even small contributions make a big difference.”

Currently completing her final exams for Year 12, Caitlin said volunteering helped her decide on a career path after school.

“I have always had an interest in medicine, but was not sure before I started volunteering,” she said.

“Since joining St John’s and volunteering at the hospital I have really focused on medicine in my future.

“Straight out of school I hope to go to university to study medicine and one day become a doctor working in rural areas.

“If I did not do volunteering while I was young I may not be as confident in my choice.”

Caitlin was nominated alongside fellow Year 12 student Faith Monger, who received a high commendation for her work around the community.

Faith volunteers at the Red Cross and the Mount Gambier West Rotary Club, in addition to being part of the Mount Gambier City Concert Band and the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra.

With a keen interest in music throughout her life, Faith said she was looking forward to building a career in the industry after a gap year next year.

The pair both agreed they would encourage other young students across the region to get involved in their community.

“Giving back to the community is so important but it is great for kids to know how it can better your future as well,” Faith said.

“We do not do it for the recognition, but it is a really good feeling to know someone is taking notice of what you are doing.

“We are both just excited for what the future holds and grateful for the recognition.”
