MOUNT Gambier City Band will farewell musical director Dan Caton after year in the top role.

Mr Caton took on the baton and role of musical director last year, with the city band eaturing at a range of events under his leadership.

The band has also travelled to Adelaide to compete in the state band championships.

The last major event for Mr Caton was the Lions Blue Lake Band Festival, where he prepared a challenging program for the band.

However, the challenges paid dividends when the ensemble was awarded first place in the Mount Gambier Blue Lake Brass Festival, held over the weekend.

The city band was established in 1895 and regularly performs at community events, including the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade, Remembrance Day, Australia Day and Anzac Day.

The city band is highly reliant on the support and assistance of its members and volunteers and this week honoured life membership to two long-time members.

Jenny Matthews and Tom Dermody have been stalwarts of the band for almost two decades.

During this time, the two members have held down many positions in the organisation.
