THIS month’s Reels Film Society screening highlighted the community group’s continued growth.

Since forming in 2006, the society has gone from strength to strength by showing a wide range of quality films on the big screen and encouraging community connection.

Last Thursday, the society held its annual general meeting at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, which saw the retirement of chairperson Rick Paltridge after four years.

In his final report, Mr Paltridge spoke highly of the many positives which took place at Reels in recent years.

In 2016, membership rose by 47pc and a further 21pc this year, allowing the new committee to set a rare standard in modern times – a reduction in the annual subscription fee.

As a membership-only society, the large increase has allowed incoming chairperson John Martin-Brown to initiate a number of positive modifications.

The spike in memberships has created further benefits for society members by offering tastings from a different regional wine company each month.

Secretary Jill Austin was re-elected, as was treasurer David Evans, who has held the position for four years.

Members will see a new format for 2018 with electronic membership cards implemented for the first time.

Prospective members are also invited to join at any time to enjoy art house and international films from across the globe.
