Dominant results in return round

PRESSURE: Kongorong's Emily Lightbody applied pressure to Glencoe's Laura Edwards in the goal circle.

MOUNT BURR 78 d NANGWARRY 30

AS the Mid South East netball season returned after the recent coronavirus shutdown, Nangwarry hosted Mount Burr, with a tough outcome for the home side.

Both teams started off slow with no score for the first few minutes.

Mount Burr was finally on the board after good ball movement in attack to find space in the circle and finish off well.

The Saints applied plenty of defensive pressure, but struggled to move the ball up the court, which saw the Mozzies lead by seven goals at the first break.

The theme continued in the second term as Mount Burr’s Heidi Clark and Maddi Haggett applied pressure on the Nangwarry goalies.

Saints Cassie Dinnison and Ange Pratt worked hard to find some movement and space for their feeders to deliver, but it was Mozzy Laura Schultz who drove hard out of defence and was feeding Ebony Clark in goals, who finished with high accuracy.

At the main break Mount Burr had extended its lead to 20 goals.

After the break Nangwarry’s Taysha James caused havoc for the Mount Burr attack, getting many tips around the ring, which Carly Ploenges picked up.

However, Ebony Clark proved hard to contain and the Mozzies scores kept piling up.

By the final break the lead had blown out to 37 goals and the game was all-but over.

Rather than rest on their laurels in the final stanza, the Mozzies simply ran rampant and the Saints had no answer, with the visitors recording a comfortable victory.

GLENCOE 54 d KONGORONG 23

Glencoe was another big winner in its clash with Kongorong.

Despite the home-court advantage, the Hawks were simply not up to the standard of the Murphies, despite an even start to the game.

After the first term just two goals separated the two, with the relentless Glencoe pressure providing a tentative lead.

From there the game changed, as the Murphies flipped a switch and began to find their feet.

The defensive pressure lifted all over the court, as they successfully rattled the young Hawks and out scored them 15-6 for the quarter.

Glencoe shooters Caitlin Hentschke and Laura Edwards were at the forefront of the second-quarter push, combining well to work through Kongorong’s defensive pressure and push their lead out to 12 at half time.

Emily Lightbody, back into the team after a month off and Georgia Bald continued to work hard in defence to give the Hawks as much opportunity as possible, but all of Kongorong’s hard work seemed to go to waste as the composure and experience of Glencoe, led by the strong presence of Donna Jaeschke through the mid court, continued to control the contest.

The Murphies defensive combo of Sarah Edwards and Emily Thompson started to lift even more in the third quarter which helped their side push out their lead out to 24 at the final break.

The young Hawks pushed hard in the final term and tried to make something out of their game, but the class of the Murphies had the legs and continued to run the game out and record a big win.

HATHERLEIGH 71 d PORT MACDONNELL 41

Hatherleigh used its home court to good effect, with a solid 30-goal victory over the visiting Port MacDonnell.

The Eagles set the scene in the opening stanza, out to a handy 13-goal lead.

That forced the Demons to re-evaluate their lineup, while the Eagles were up and about and remained unchanged.

Hatherleigh continued to control the game with quick and fast transitions from end to end, while the Demons defence found it hard to stop Keston Green and Lacey Haines at the attacking end of the court.

Port MacDonnell’s attack struggled to find space in the goal circle, with Maddie Redman and Maddie Pulmer making the Demons work hard for every possession.

That resulted in a 17-goal lead for Hatherleigh going into the main break.

While both sides continued to contest all over the court in the third term, the Eagles’ full-court intensity stepped up and they continued to capitalise and extend their lead going into the last term.

The final quarter saw the home side change things up, with Lara MacGregor taking the goal defence bib, youngster Rosie Nettle taking going to wing defence and Maddie Pulmer swung into goal attack.

It took Hatherleigh some time to adjust to the changes, but they still continued to control the game and claimed a comfortable win.

KALANGADOO 76 d ROBE 38

Kalangadoo showed why they occupy the top rung on the ladder, as they made short work of Robe.

The Magpies travelled to face the Roosters, but that had little effect on the outcome.

In the opening term Georgia Perkins rebounded well for the home side and made use of any missed goals by Kalangadoo’s Melissa Russell and Abbey Duncan.

However, Kalangadoo was up by 10 goals at the first break to put the Roosters on notice.

The second quarter saw both teams shoot accurately, but Russell shot 20 of the magpies goals and only missed two for the quarter, as the lead extended to 25 at the main break.

After a couple of changes at half time, Robe found some extra drive onto the ring and seemed to be able to work the ball into the goalies easier, with Tori Gluyas shooting accurately with 10 goals for the quarter.

However, the magpies continued to work hard and increased the margin to 36 goals at the final break, then ran out convincing victors.
