Cold weather takes toll

THE recent cool conditions reduced numbers at the Mount Gambier Golf Club, with the women’s field down to just 12 last week.

The fairways were heavy from the downfalls the previous day and putting was challenging in the stableford competition.

However, long-hitter Helen McIntyre had all aspect of her game under control to claim the winner’s prize with 38 points, two shots under her handicap, which in the conditions was an impressive result.

A consistent performance saw with 19 points on each nine, which also included birdies on the par 3 holes – the eighth and 10th.

Runner-up was Vicki Clark with a sound score of 34 points, ahead of Janina Morrison with 33.

Di O’Donnell was the only ball rundown winner who finished one shot further back with 32 points, while the accurate Faye Mainwaring again claimed the pro shot, while Clark, who is gradually reducing her handicap, scored the prize for the best front nine with 20 points.

The third round of the Hudson Plumbing trophy will be played this week.

Eleven women played a stableford round on Saturday and despite heavy conditions, Clark again stepped up a cog to score 21 points on the front nine, including a wipe on the eighth, before completing her round with a further 22 points to score a runaway win with 43.

Jan Shanahan was runner-up with 33 points, with McIntyre, Mainwaring and O’Donnell ball rundown winners.

Mainwaring maintained her accuracy to claim the pro shot, while Gemma Winterborn was nearest the pin on the 16th hole.
