Dartmoor honours beloved resident

THE Dartmoor community rallied together recently to raise an estimated $10,000 for the Cancer Council in memory of beloved resident Bill Madex.

The Dartmoor Football and Netball Club brought the wider community together on April 24 to pay their respects to Mr Madex, who died following a battle with cancer.

Donations flowed in as an auction and numerous head shaves were held to raise money at the inaugural Bill Madex Memorial Day.

Club secretary Jess Childs said fundraiser was significant to members with Mr Madex a highly regarded and respected life-long member.

“He would come to the games each and every weekend with his family,” Ms Childs said.

“But he was also always seen at the pub, was a member of the angling club and was just a very well known fella around town.”

Ms Childs said the community had shown its respect for Mr Madex’s legacy through the fundraiser.

“It shows how much he means to us and so many of us have been affected by cancer or know someone who has been affected,” she said.

“We have been able to get out there and raise a lot of money for the foundation which is fantastic.”

Ms Childs said the fundraising activities could be a possible annual occurrence for the club following this year’s success.

“The club is really stoked that it was so successful and had so many people come down for the day,” she said.

“It was a huge night and was great for the club and turned out to be a fantastic weekend.”

The club also participated in choosing a player of the day with Mr Madex’s family naming the winner.

“It was overall a really fantastic result and we could not be happier,” Ms Childs said.
