A SOLD-out crowd filled Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre on Friday night to catch a NBL pre-season game between the Adelaide 36ers and South East Melbourne Phoenix.

The exhibition basketball match featured Mount Gambier Pioneer Nick Marshall as he took to the court for the 36ers.

He had plenty of court time at his home venue, with just over 23 minutes on the floor.

After shaking off some early nerves, he settled well and his first shot of the night was a three-point bomb.

He finished with seven points for the game, while playing an important role setting up plays.

Overall, it was a strong team performance from the 36ers which pushed them out to a comfortable 36-point win.

A total of seven double-figure scores highlighted the selflessness in the Adelaide roster, with every player having their moment in the spotlight.

The Phoenix started well, but Adelaide soon settled and with the aid of some free throws took hold of the game.

From there the lead slowly grew across the four quarters.

Jamaal Franklin impressed in the first half and set the tone in offence, while Tre Kell Lii had a standout third quarter to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Halftime entertainment was provided by local dance studio HYPE, while the crowd also got involved in a half-court shot for a year’s supply of McDonalds coffee.

Following the match there was ample time for fans to meet their idols, with players from both teams sticking courtside for a meet and greet, providing opportunities for photos and autographs.

Adelaide 36ers coach CJ Burton touched on the chance to play in Mount Gambier during the post-game press conference.

“To be here in Mount Gambier in front of a great crowd, to play in the regional areas is definitely a special moment for everybody,” he said.

The 36ers will play another pre-season match this Saturday in Adelaide against the Brisbane Bullets.
