Top scores in par competition

THE last of the four rounds of the Blue Lake Golf Club’s Metro Bakery and Cafe Silver Salver was well attended last week and with the spring weather forecast in the high teens and the fairways having good run, a few attained top scores.

The par competition is probably the least favoured of all the golf games and leaves no room for error, but that did not worry Division 2’s Beryl Mahoney who claimed the win with 3-up, from Trudy Herbert on 2-up.

Captain Helen Myers took the top spot in Division 1, playing one under her handicap of 24 after a consistent front and back nine of 1-down and square.

Meyers card included 13 squared holes, two pars and just one scrub.

Runner-up Helen Stratford, back from a four-month rehabilitation of a broken ankle, was pleased to be on the course and to be in the winner’s circle, carding 3-down off a 21 handicap.

It was a case of mainly squaring holes, with par’s on the third and 15th.

Stratford only just secured the runner-up voucher on a count-back from Lee-Anne Medhurst.

Mahoney had a great day on the greens, with the score of the day of 3-up.

Her card included par’s on the fifth, 12th, 14th and on the long par 5 17th holes and would have been thinking “what could have been” if her card did not include three scrubs.

Runner-up Trudy Herbert has been in a purple patch of late and showed her consistency is still working scoring 2-up.

Square on the front nine and pars on the 12th and 14th helped her secure another voucher to add to her recent wins.

Karen Panagopolous just fell short, carding 1-down.

Nearest to the pin second shot on the par 3 14th went to Division 1’s Geraldine Scott and Herbert in Division 2.

Novelty prizes for a chip-in “ferret” and a birdie went to Dianne Perryman and Rosemary Martland respectively.

The winner of the Short course trophy after five rounds sponsored by Grant and Dianne Perryman was announced and it was fitting it was won by Dianne Perryman, who has volunteered her time as the women’s handicapper for over 20 years as well as her and her husband donating prizes for various events.

Runner-up was Josie Ashby.
