Cellar Dwellers event rejuvenates social scene following lockdown

WINE AND DINE: Jodie and Brent Deland with Melinda and Jim Moore enjoy a night out at Pipers at Penola as it hosts the 14th Annual Symbolic Siblings Degustation event during the Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers celebrations.

CELLAR Dwellers has helped kick-start the rejuvenation of the Penola Coonawarra district’s social scene as several COVID-19 restrictions were eased last week.

Among the events held to launch the month-long celebration was a dine-in collaboration between Pipers of Penola and Bowen Estate, hosting the 14th annual Symbolic Siblings Degustation event.

Bowen Estate winemaker Emma Bowen said the night was extremely successful with older vintages of the renown winery showcased during a degustation format meal.

“My brother and Pipers of Penola chef Simon Bowen put a lot of thought into matching the balance of the food with the aged characteristics of the wine,” Ms Bowen said.

“One highlight of the evening was the 1998 Bowen Estate Ampelon, a wine which we have only produced once from the highly acclaimed vintage of 1998.”

Ms Bowen said the event was not difficult to organise with COVID-19 with reduced capacity at the restaurant the only major impact.

“It is heartening to see visitor returning to the region and the proactive adjustment of business to ensure COVID-19 regulations are in place,” she said.
