PERSONAL services such as beauty therapy and tattoo parlours are among the growing number of businesses which have been forced to close their doors as restrictions to stem the spread of COVID-19 virus continues to grow.
Spa massage, amusement parks, indoor and outdoor play centres, community and recreation centres, barre and spin facilities, social and sporting based activities, community clubs, halls, galleries and libraries have also been affected.
The new restrictions were announced last week, with a number of Penola-based businesses having to close their doors until further notice.
Penola’s Three Diamonds Tattoo artist Bronte Cox was forced to shut the shop on March 25 under the direction of the Federal Government’s restrictions.
“Because we have clientele travelling from nearby and interstate, we can understand the decision that was made,” Mr Cox said.
“We also did not want to risk the health of our community by having a client bring it to our town.”
Mr Cox said a few appointments had already cancelled before the restrictions came into effect.
The business is now using its savings to cover day to day expenses.
While electricity costs had been reduced, other bills such as insurance still needed to be paid.
“We can understand the measures that were put in place by the government to stop the spread of the virus,” Mr Cox said.
“Our trade requires a lot of close contact with the client, so we do wear gloves, disposable aprons and other forms of standard health protection set by the industry.
“We had to start wearing masks during the last week of the closure even though we followed all cleaning and health requirements set by the tattoo industry.
“We decided it was not worth the risk to our family, friends and the town of Penola.”
Until the restrictions are lifted, all appointments and gift vouchers for the business have been frozen with Mr Cox saying they would be honoured and adjusted accordingly.
“Our hopes are that everyone comply with the actions outlined by the government so we can re-open as soon as possible,” he said.
“We are looking forward to opening the doors to catch up with all our clients and friends once this pandemic is over.
“We, like many others, can only hope this pandemic finishes swiftly and we have a safe outcome for everyone.”
