Students dive into Mary MacKillop Memorial School’s annual swimming carnival

WINNING HOUSE: McCormack house took home the Mary MacKillop Memorial School swimming carnival honours.

MARY MacKillop Memorial School held its annual swimming carnival recently, following a week of swimming lessons which helped students practice their strokes and gain confidence in the water.

The event was hailed a success as all year levels dove in and participated.

McCormack claimed the overall honours on the day, followed closely by Cameron and Woods/MacKillop.

The house team captains and school captains opened the day with a prayer and student oath, before they led the water aerobics warm up for all students.

Team chants were repeated throughout the day, led enthusiastically by the house captains.

Freestyle races were first up with students swimming in their age groups and having the opportunity to compete in Open age
races.

Those events were followed by the Reception and Year 1 propelling races where the older students were in the water with the youngsters to assist them with starting, while also providing moral support.

Backstroke followed and was also separated into age groups and open events, while all year levels participates in the noodle and relay races.

After the recess break students participated in breast stroke, survival backstroke and novelty events.

The novelties included a cork scramble, retrieving items from the bottom of the pool, rescue relays and a boogie-board
relay.

After lunch the Year 6 and 7 students competed in a medley relay, which was followed by the whole school watermelon race – a tunnel ball event using a watermelon held across the full length of both pools.

The final event for the day was the parent and adult versus Year 7 student race, which was narrowly won by the adults.

Presentations were made to the junior champions, who were Tait Kidman, Sophie Pearce and Lilly Flint, while the senior champions were Zac Zema and Holly
Flint.
