Wattle Range Mayor eyes leadership role

LEADERSHIP ROLE: Wattle Range Council Mayor Des Noll wants to be the vice-president of the Limestone Coast Local Government Association.

WATTLE Range Council could soon have a leader on the peak regional local government body for the first time in its 23-year history.

Mayor Des Noll intends to nominate as the vice-president of the Limestone Coast Local Government Association (LCLGA).

The long-serving current occupant of the position is Grant District mayor Richard Sage.

Mr Noll told the January monthly council meeting he intends to put his name forward for the leadership role when the government association holds its yearly forum at Naracoorte on February 14.

“I have been having talks about this with my fellow mayors,” Mr Noll said.

The current LCLGA president is Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Erika Vickery.

The seven mayors of the region’s-constituent councils decide on the leadership roles every 12 months.

Speaking to The South Eastern Times outside the council meeting, Mr Noll said he was confident he would work well with Ms Vickery if she continued in the president’s role.

Although such past LCLGA leaders as Rory McEwen, Don Pegler, Steve Perryman and David Hood had political ambitions at the state and federal level, Mr Noll stressed these circumstances did not apply to him.

“I am only interested in serving the community at the local level,” Mr Noll said.

Meanwhile, councillors ratified a number of staff nominations to seven of the LCLGA sub-committees.

There were only three changes to the 2019 nominations with engineering director Peter Halton withdrawing from the Green Triangle Freight Action Plan Implementation Group while economic development manager Roger Babolka is looking to join two other fire management-related groups.
