WITH the Southern Zone rock lobster season opening yesterday, recreational fishermen are being reminded of the South Australian Recreational Fishing Guide.
The Southern Zone – which stretches between the Murray River and the Victorian border – is open until May 31, 2020, with fishermen across the region eager to lower their pots.
Although a popular past time, Primary Industries and Regional Development Minister Tim Whetstone warned fishers must correctly adhere to regulations or risk penalties of up to $20,000.
“I remind all recreational fishers to ensure your 2019-2020 pot registrations are in place and brush up on the rules,” Mr Whetstone said.
“By correctly following the fishing rules you are ensuring the long-term sustainability of our fish stocks for future generations to enjoy.
“I commend the majority of fishers who do take notice of the rules and respect them.
“The fishing rules are easily available at www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing, via the SA Recreational Fishing Guide app or by calling Fishwatch on 1800 065 522.
“If fishers suspect someone is not doing the right thing I urge them to call Fishwatch – their report can remain anonymous. Reports can also be made via the app.”
