CONMURRA Border Collie Jed has raced into the lead of the annual Cobber Dog Challenge after two weeks of competition.
Eleven farm dogs are vying for the title of “top dog” in the three-week competition.
Tracking collars measure distance travelled, speed and duration each day.
Representing South Australia alongside fellow South East competitor Breakit, Jed has hit the lead early, topping the table in two of the three categories and leading the pack overall.
In the two weeks of competition, Jed has travelled an impressive distance of 398.1 km in more than 48 hours at an average speed of around 8.1kph.
Jed’s strong performance comes as no surprise to his owner Peta Bauer.
She said Jed would run behind the ute, going paddock to paddock, to burn off extra energy, when they previously worked on a smaller property.
Ms Bauer and Jed work on a property with 25,000 sheep and 1500 cattle with most of their work in the last week involving sheep.
The team has been busy moving the merinos through the yards for jetting to protect against flies and giving them injections against diseases, in preparation for lambing.
“We knew Jed did a lot but it is amazing to see just how much,” she said.
“He has very good cover and a huge cast, he will keep going until he has found all the stock.”
The Cobber Challenge runs until September 1.
