ICY temperatures were recorded right across the South East over the weekend, with some overnight minimums among the lowest recorded in decades.
Mount Gambier dropped to -2.2C on Saturday – the coldest temperature in 12 years.
An icy blast hit Coonawarra on Saturday, with a freezing -3.8C, the coldest temperature observed in 37 years.
Naracoorte also shivered through the weekend, experiencing a low of -3.8C, while over the border Casterton recorded a frosty -3.3C yesterday morning.
Mount Barker residents Peter and Jan Bean have combated the wintry Mount Gambier conditions through trail walking and riding.
“We find the exercise is ideal in colder conditions and Mount Gambier has the perfect trail tracks,” Peter said.
The 10-day stayers have ventured out and explored the surrounding areas, just with many layers underneath their puffer jackets.
“Some people asked if were going up north this winter and they definitely raised their eyebrows when we said we are going to Mount Gambier,” Jan said.
“It has been extremely chilly and the cottage’s wood heater where we are staying has definitely been getting a workout.”
Mount Gambier is forecast to be mostly sunny for the remainder of the week with the temperature gradually climbing to a predicted maximum of 18C on Friday.
The mornings are also expected to be slightly warmer, with today and tomorrow’s minimum set to be five degrees.
