Media industry interest leads student to explore journalism work experience

ON THE JOB: Work experience student Darcie Smith captures an image of grapevines in Coonawarra.

WITH a family connection to the South East, Willunga High School student Darcie Smith has journeyed to the Blue Lake city to immerse herself in the world of journalism.

Currently completing her Year 10 studies, Darcie has spent the week shadowing journalists at The Border Watch and learning the ins and outs of the media industry.

Darcie has long visited her family holiday home at Pelican Point and has a keen interest in learning more about the Limestone Coast.

This, coupled with her thirst for knowledge, brought her to The Border Watch office.

Although Darcie has a focus on the arts at school, she has looked to explore her other interests.

A self-proclaimed social butterfly, Darcie believes the world of journalism could be the perfect fit for her.

“I really enjoy being social and getting to know new people,” Darcie said.

“I think journalism is really interesting as that is something you get to do every day.

“But, I feel I need to become more confident in my writing abilities before looking further into the career and I believe completing my work experience at a country newspaper is a great way to do that.”

During her stay in the office, Darcie has spent time with The Border Watch court reporter Todd Lewis, travelled to cover stories for The Penola Pennant with Katie Jackson and helped Charlotte Varcoe with regular news rounds.

“Some of the things I enjoyed the most were going up to Penola, interviewing community members and attending a sitting of court.

“I think the jobs I have attended have given me a balanced view of what happens at a newspaper.”

In the future, Darcie hopes to see where a career in journalism can take her.
