TENISON Woods College has shone on the airwaves, taking home a swag of accolades at the recent 2019 Arch D Radio Awards.

A podcast produced by three students and an ex-scholar was named the most listened to podcast for 2018, while Lachlan Price – who features on the podcast – received an honourable mention in the best senior male announcer category.

Mr Price worked with fellow students Edward Layzell, Declan Kowalick and 2018 graduate Luke Marcus on the Shine FM initiative.

Mr Layzell and Mr Price attended the award ceremony earlier this month alongside college assistant principal Michelle Coote and Shine FM coordinator Jase Scheidl.

The accolades were supported by Adelaide-based 107.9 Life FM, which promotes Arch D, a catholic youth radio show co-hosted by young people from Catholic schools, youth groups and parishes.

DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY: Life Changer program facilitator Nathan Hayes, Tenison Woods College principal David Mezinec and director of wellbeing Jennie Sanderson.

Mr Layzell said he was surprised about the win.

“The night went well and there were some interesting speakers,” he said.

“I would encourage fellow students to join Shine FM as it is an intriguing program that has opened up opportunities I did not know were possible.

“This includes our involvement in Arch D.”

Mr Scheidl said Shine FM was a platform for students to have their voices heard.

“Shine enables students to become involved in a real-world media environment from a young age,” he said.

“It allows them to develop the communication skills to take them as far as they want to go.

“These skills of communication, creativity and self-confidence can also benefit them in future work environments.”

The college’s Year 8 cohort also started the first installment of the Life Changer program yesterday.

Life Changer workshops are all based on positive psychology and involve interactive, informative and fun for students.

Mount Gambier will be labelled as a “community champion” being the first South Australian community to run Awaken the Hero program.

Five sessions will be held at the college aiming to help students feel more comfortable in themselves and highlight personal strengths and weaknesses.
