DIVISION 1 MEN

GLENCOE GOLD 3-26 d GLENCOE MAROON 3-25

THE Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season drew to a close over the weekend, with the senior grand finals contested at Olympic Park on Saturday.

In the Division 1 decider, Glencoe’s Maroon and Gold teams went head-to-head, with the latter claiming the honours in a close contest, after finishing the minor rounds in third position.

Though the final result shows just one game separating the sides, the final doubles game was in fact forfeited by the victors, as the Gold team was unable to lose regardless of the match’s result.

The Maroon team held the advantage in the singles games, with the closest match of the day a 7-5 win to Maroon’s Kevin Thomson over David Ferguson, while Dave Boyce defeated Jonathon Brohier 6-3.

It was only the top-order encounter the Gold team was able to win, as Dylan Childs claimed a solid 6-1 victory over Patrick Mitchell.

In the doubles, Gold’s Ferguson and Brohier recorded a hard-fought 6-4 win over Boyce and Tim Biggins, while Brohier’s partnership with Childs saw an easier 6-1 triumph over Mitchell and Biggins.

That saw the Gold team with three sets and 26 games heading into the final doubles match.

However, as the Maroon side could not win despite the result of the clash, the game was forfeited and recorded as a 6-0 win to Maroon.

It was the perfect end of the season for the Glencoe Tennis Club and showed the determination of Glencoe Gold, defeating both second-placed Uniting Church and ladder leader Glencoe Gold to claim the premiership.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN

REIDY PARK 4-29 d GLENCOE 2-27

DESPITE the dominance of Glencoe in the senior tennis competition, it was Reidy Park which took out the season honours in the Division 2 women.

It was a tight contest between the two teams and although two sets separated them at the end of the day, the game difference was also just two.

The singles matches saw Reidy with the advantage, as Bailey Young and Emily Edwards defeated Sarah and Laura Edwards respectively, with 6-4 and 6-2 results.

The final singles game saw Glencoe with a win, as Chelsea McKinnon accounted for Sharon Edwards 6-4.

Reidy also held the majority in the doubles sets, with victories in two of the three matches to win the day.

The closest encounter was a 7-5 win to Reidy’s Young and Sharon Edwards over Sarah and Ashlea Edwards, while Young also partnered with Emily Edwards for a 6-4 win over Sarah and Laura Edwards.

The final doubles match saw a dominant 6-0 win to Glencoe’s Laura and Ashlea Edwards, but it was not enough to turn the result to their favour.

DIVISION 2

GLENCOE MAROON 9-62 d GLENCOE GOLD 3-41

IN the second all-Glencoe grand final it was the Maroon team which defeated its Gold clubmates to claim the Division 2 premiership.

The final result was a convincing six-set victory, as Maroon excelled in both the singles and doubles matches.

Just two singles sets were won by the Gold team, with number one man Sam Auld defeating Maroon’s Troy Clasohm 6-4 and number three man David Cole accounting for Will Hann 6-3.

The remaining four singles games were won convincingly by the Maroon team, as Craig Childs won 6-2 over Mark Feetom, Abbie Cocks defeated Eliza Cole 6-3 and Jorja Mitchell claimed a 6-2 victory over Alison Auld 6-2.

Maroon’s Jenna Paproth recorded the biggest singles win, as she did not drop a game on her way to a 6-0 win against Ruth Thami.

It was in the doubles sets the Maroon team really took control, as it dropped just one set on its way to premiership glory.

That match saw Gold’s Feetom and Cole defeat Childs and Hann 6-0.

But with the remaining sets won by Maroon, the season honours went to the ladder leaders.

The closest doubles match was a 7-5 result for Maroon’s Paproth and Cocks.

DIVISION 3

MOORAK GREEN 7-60 d MOORAK GOLD 5-49

IT was the singles matches which saw Moorak’s Green team defeat intra-club rival Moorak Gold in the Division 3 grand final.

In an eventual 7-5 victory, the Green side’s four singles wins were the difference in the end, as Gold won just two.

Gold’s Ryan Horrigan did well to win the number one men’s match, with a 6-4 result over Chris Tully, while Sal Harfull also claimed a 6-4 win against Marilyn Gordon.

However, with Trevor and Aaron Pettingill winning their matches 6-2 and 6-4 respectively and both Tarrah Taylor (6-1) and Kate Facy (6-4) also victorious, the Green team held the advantage.

In the doubles sets it was an even split, with three wins each, which resulted in a two-set margin at the end of play.

The closest doubles encounters was a 7-5 victory to Green’s Taylor and Gordon over Sophie Johnson and Harfull, as well as a win to Gold’s Dave Coombe and Harry Johnson of the same margin against the Pettingills.

The result saw the teams finish in their respective ladder positions, as Moorak Green went into the match as the favourite, with just one loss for the minor season, while the Gold side remained runners-up for 2018-19.
