MOUNT Gambier City Council will vote to implement no stopping zones at the Jubilee Highway East and Attamurra Road intersection to improve traffic safety at this week’s monthly meeting.
Council’s Operational Standing Committee supported establishing the no stopping zones to ensure the intersection continues to be negotiated safely by motorists.
A council report said observations of the parking arrangements since the opening of the McDonalds restaurant adjacent to the junction found the parking of larger vehicles was occurring.
Officers found semi trailers and caravans were restricting the sight distance for vehicles exiting at Attamurra Road and the McDonalds car park.
The report said council had also received complaints from other motorists.
Council said the Transport Department suggested the implementation of parking restrictions along Jubilee Highway was necessary to establish safe intersection sight lines.
Committee chair councillor Christian Greco said no parking zones through the intersection was a “no brainer”, which was supported by Cr Paul Jenner.
“People in the community are talking about it,” Cr Jenner said.
“I think it is a very positive thing.”
The parking zones will be discussed by the full council at next week’s monthly meeting.
