Animal welfare league in limbo

THE embattled South East Animal Welfare league will remain in limbo as it awaits a decision from Mount Gambier City Council about increased funding.

The not-for-profit animal shelter made a request for increased funding outside the parameters of its existing agreement with the council in August.

The request was discussed at council’s September meeting, with elected members ultimately deferring the decision to the incoming council for deliberation following the local government elections which are now under way.

A five-year financial agreement between the SEAWL, Grant District Council and Mount Gambier City Council sees city council contribute $28,600 (adjusted by CPI) towards the shelter each year.

Grant Council contributes just shy of $12,000 per year, while the agreement also allows for impound fees per dog to be retained by the league.

League proponents formally requested an additional $100,000 collectively from both Grant and City councils.

Grant Council previously rejected the plea, resolving to allow the current contract to run its course.

The current agreement concludes in June next year.

The league’s Riddoch Highway facility received 219 dogs and 142 cats last year.
