THE versatility of Lego to create all sorts of characters, vehicles and buildings will be on show at Empak Homes’ BrickGambier over the long weekend at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds.
Creations ranging from Scooby Doo amusement parks to trademark Limestone Coast buildings will be displayed on Sunday and Monday.
Empak Homes BrickGambier is a family-friendly Lego fan event showcasing the humble brick and its applications.
“People were really impressed last year when they saw the hands-on features,” event spokesperson Emma Robinson said.
“It seemed everyone expected an exhibit for children they were not allowed to touch, but we invite everyone of all ages as most creations are made by adult volunteers.”
Brick-a-laide is a similar event showcased in Adelaide attracting an audience of around 20,000 people per year, with Mount Gambier’s showcase featuring two of the winners from the state capital contest.
“Adult winner Steve Campbell will showcase his winning life-sized grand father clock and best under 16s entry ‘Connor’s Bricks’ will bring something equally as good,” Mr Robinson said.
Ms Robinson and another 11 exhibitors have been busy creating something for everyone out of Lego.
“It’s great to have an event like this in the Limestone Coast that gets the community involved,” Ms Robinson said.
“Not everyone can afford to go to Adelaide and Melbourne and here we will have locals supporting locals, with six of our exhibitors from Mount Gambier.”
She said the showcase celebrated a quirky form of creativity.
“It brings volunteers from outside the regular community with people reaching out from places as far as Hamilton and Tailem Bend,” Ms Robinson said.
“The Mount Gambier Navy Cadets are also getting involved, catering for the event and it is great to see the local community can assist and support other local volunteers.”
Featured displays unique to the Limestone Coast include replica models of Mount Gambier’s old hospital, town hall and forest plantations.
Visitors are welcome to explore the second annual display and experience hands-on activities from 10am to 5pm both days.
Entry will be $5 for singles and $12 for families, with all proceeds donated to Mount Gambier’s Wet Noses Animal Rescue.
