Cake designers sink teeth into demo day

SPECIAL EVENT: The South Eastern Cake Designers group is holding a demonstration day on Saturday with three guest speakers and a focus on everything from a flamingo cake to a design creating the Elsa character from the popular Frozen film.

SOUTH East pastry fans are invited to a special cake demonstration day on Saturday hosted by the South Eastern Cake Designers.

The event will feature guest demonstrators from the Cake Decorators Association of South Australia (CDASA).

Demonstrators include Brenda Damen, June Jones and Marlene Spratt showcasing techniques.

Ms Damen is operator of Patisserie For All, a state and national cake decorating competitor at masters level and a South Australian state decorating judge who will demonstrate her chocolate techniques, including making a flower and a flamingo.

As a member of the CDASA for many years and past president for the Adelaide central branch, she often helps out where she can and demonstrates for other branches, interstate and even in New
Zealand.

Ms Spratt started cake decorating 18 years ago when she placed silk flowers and ribbons on a cake and added decoration with fondant icing.

She has since entered the Royal Adelaide Show (RAS) and state competitions in October each year, progressing to the masters section after receiving numerous prizes.

Ms Spratt has served as president of the Marion branch of the CDASA for four years and a member for 10.

She will create at cake based on the character Elsa from the popular Frozen children’s film.

The final guest will be Ms Jones, who will shar the Lambeth techniques for royal icing piping work.

The technique is the over-piping and layering of royal icing to create height in side designs.

Ms Jones’ demonstration will be followed by a mini-workshop.
