THE Millicent Business Community Association (MBCA) is seeking input from local businesses on the type of short term and medium courses that could be conducted in Millicent.
Association chairperson Lee Morgan said the group intended on consult with as many businesses and local service providers as possible to identify the best vocational and job-specific qualifications for the region.
Mr Morgan said the MBCA’s aim was to prepare residents for industry careers through upskilling and improve both business and employment prospects.
“Given the escalating opportunities in the tourism sector we need to explore suitable courses to provide local people an opportunity to develop suitable skills for the tourism industry,” he said.
“Millicent is blessed with a hospital, medical centre and aged care centre, surely there are opportunities for training courses in the health sector as well.
“Another sector where there is significant opportunity to develop a skill base is the light construction sector.
“Maybe courses on light earthmoving machinery with courses to operate bob cats, trench-diggers, front end loaders and excavators could assist local construction and earthmoving businesses.”
Mr Morgan said the group’s pro-active approach would safeguard any skill shortages in Millicent and the greater Wattle Range area.
“We have a duty to our community to seek the views of local businesses and others on what limits us in skills from moving forward and the MBCA intends to seek the views of its constituents with an online survey in next few weeks ” he said.
“We will soon be seeking this information through a survey to our MBCA members, however in the meantime if the general community wants to express their views they can email the MBCA.”
