Bowls: RSL holds on

DESPITE losses to the Mount Gambier RSL and District Bowling Club Saturday Open Pennant Division 3 side, as well as the Friday Pennant Division 1 team, the RSL still has a strong presence in the grand finals this week at Millicent.

Mount Gambier RSL’s Division 1 Red side will tackle Mount Gambier Red while, Division 2 Red will play Robe in the major game.

Saturday Open Pennant

MOUNT Gambier RSL Division 3 Red travelled to Penola to battle with Kingston.

After such a strong showing all season, this side’s losses in both the semi-finals and the preliminary finals were disappointing.

On Saturday they did not handle the conditions at Penola as well as Kingston and lost by 24 shots, 55-79.

Tony Freeman’s rink was the only one to begin strongly and led 8-1 early, before being over-run by the halftime break.

They again surged from the 19th end, but could not get over the line, going down by two shots.

Alby McIntyre’s four scored some handy multiples in the second half to level with one end to play, but also went down by two shots.

It was a dispirited battle on Bob White’s rink, where they were powerless to stop Kingston’s domination in the second half and lost decisively.

Friday Women’s Pennant

DESPITE beating Mount Gambier in both minor round encounters during the season, Mount Gambier RSL Red played from behind for the entire preliminary final game at Beachport on Friday.

Towards the end of the game, as Beryl Messenger’s team gained the ascendancy over Leanne Hentschke’s at the same time as Veronica Opie’s team scored a series of ends, an air of excitement and

possibility entered the contest.

After trailing throughout, Mount Gambier RSL bounced back into contention.

However, it just missed out as Mount Gambier claimed the win by a solitary shot 44-45.
