Golf: Heywood player steals the spotlight

TOP DAY FOR LOW SCORES: Division 1 runner-up Josie Ashby, Division 1 winner Sharon Cole, Division 2 runner-up Dianne Allen and Division 2 winner Carol Megaw enjoyed the conditions at the Blue Lake Golf Links a last week.

A GOOD size field greeted the starter for a par competition at the Blue Lake Golf Course.

The greens had recently been cored and sanded which caused some angst as many a putt pulled up short of the hole, but a handful of women playing square or only one or two shots over their handicap proved it was to their liking.

In Division 1 it was an “out-of-towner” taking home the spoils.

Heywood’s Sharon Cole finished square to the card off a 22 handicap with the Daily Scratch Rating of 69.

Cole did have to face a count-back from the ever-consistent Josie Ashby, also off a 22 handicap, followed by Annette Ford (-3) and Helen Stratford (-4).

Division 2’s Carol Megaw survived a countback from Dianne Allen, both square, followed closely by Lesley McPherson, Fay Price and Beryl Mahoney (all -1).

Nearest the pins on the 16th par three hole were won by Cole in Division 1 and Megaw in Division 2.

The pro-shot on the par three, fifth hole was won by Mahoney.

Today will see the March monthly medal played in stroke format and count putts, coinciding with the second and final qualifying round of the 2018 handicap championships, along with the second round of the Captain’s trophy.
