Residents on board mental health initiative

MORE than 60 people from diverse backgrounds attended the launch of Lifeboat SE last Tuesday night.

Partnering with the South East Junction, a group of locals who have experience in dealing with stress, depression and anxiety will deliver the new initiative to help people manage stressful situations and support early intervention to improve community health.

South East Junction coordinator Nel Jans said the launch event was attended by business owners, representatives from sporting clubs, schools and service providers.

“Already several people have expressed their interest to join the crew and offer their lived experience to support others and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” Ms Jans said.

“One of the guys who attended the launch said it really made him realise what he has been going through and that he is not alone.

“People stuck around afterwards to discuss and chat, with many congratulating the team on not only the launch, but establishing Lifeboat SE and their willingness to support others.”

The team will now “set sail” to support each other and local mates.

The first time to “hop on board” will be April 3 at the Mount Gambier Civic Centre level one conference room from 6-7pm.
