Local teens to represent Millicent service clubs

LOCAL teenagers Louis Brown and Sam Linton have been nominated as Millicent Lions Club Youth of the Year representatives recently.

Their names were announced last Tuesday night at the fortnightly dinner meeting of the Millicent Lions Club at the Millicent and District Community Club.

The Millicent Lions Club will be represented by Louis while Sam will represent the Millicent Lioness Club.

Louis attends Millicent High School and also won the public speaking section.

Sam is a student at St Martin’s Lutheran College in Mount Gambier.

TOP HONOUR: Louis Brown will represent the Millicent Lions Club in the regional final of the Lions Youth of the Year.

The pair will now progress to the zone final of Lions Youth of the Year at Robe on March 10.

Also competing for the honours were three other Millicent teenagers: Tenison Woods College’s Emily Jennings and Millicent High School pair Karla Lambert and Heidi Langdon.

The Lions Youth of the Year judges for 2018 were Christian pastoral support worker Nathan McDuff, Millicent Business Community Association secretary Marg Chapple and former Wattle Range Council deputy mayor Pat Muhovics.

Millicent Lions Club member Des Noll oversaw the arrangements for this year’s event.

He said the students presented entertaining speeches on various topics including forensic science, the CanTeen charity and overseas travel.

“The three schools can be proud of how they were represented by their students,” Mr Noll said.

“They all acted in an adult-like manner.”

The Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education, and provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities, so vital in developing youths into first class citizens.

Students meet in fellowship and have the opportunity of open discussion, exchange of ideas and meet professional people of a community service club organisation.

The Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community.

A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its potential winners.

By emphasising these qualities, it hopes to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women.

The awards is an excellent means of assisting Australia’s youth and promoting the essential role of leadership development and community service organisations in maintaining Australia’s high standard of living.
