Mount Gambier’s “Great Debate”

ELECTION SHOWDOWN: Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell, Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Lynette Martin OAM and Liberal candidate Craig Marsh gear up for the “Great Debate”.

POWER prices, tourism and the need for a stable medical workforce will be among the hot topics expected to be flagged at the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce’s state election “Great Debate”.

The candidates debate – scheduled for February 19, at City Hall – will be the first of its kind for the independent business group.

With the election countdown now well under way, the chamber has already confirmed incumbent Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell and Liberal hopeful Craig Marsh will line up for the event.

The chamber is also hoping the other candidates coming out of the woodwork will also attend the debate.

Chamber president Lynette Martin OAM said she expected a raft of key issues to be raised at the event.

She said major issues could also include the high cost of running a business, education and infrastructure needs for the city.

“These are just a few of the issues I expect people to raise at the debate,” the business leader said.

“The candidates will have the opportunity to speak at the opening of the event for five minutes before addressing questions,” Ms Martin said.

She said the chamber was hosting the event to provide a platform so people could get a first-hand snapshot of the candidates’ policies before polling day.

“It will provide a great opportunity for the people of Mount Gambier to learn more about the candidates and to be understand what they see as important for Mount Gambier,” Ms Martin said.

While only two candidates had nominated to date, she said the chamber would ask all candidates if more contenders came forward.

Attendees will need to register for the free event via Sticky Tickets.

People are also encouraged to lodge a question on the chamber’s Facebook site or when they register via Sticky Tickets.

The debate – moderated by ABC presenter Selina Green – will run from 7pm to 8.30pm.
