A MOLOTOV cocktail was thrown at a property in Mount Gambier on Monday, causing damage to furniture on the verandah and prompting police to seek information from the community.
At around 1pm, the home-made weapon was thrown at the house, which started a fire on the front verandah, causing damage to a table and chairs.
Fortunately for occupants of the home, the fire did not spread any further.
Limestone Coast Police officer in charge Superintendent Grant Moyle said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“I understand it was a home-made item with a flammable liquid inside in a glass container, with an ignition source attached to that and it was thrown at the house,” Supt Moyle said.
“We have spoken to some people in relation to the incident, however no charges have been laid at this stage.”
Supt Moyle said it was unclear what the motivation was for the incident and whether it was a targeted attack.
“It would be purely speculation to suggest whether they were known to the victim,” Supt Moyle said.
“It was a very serious act, it has the potential to damage property, but more-so injure people and that’s why it is a very serious offence and we are taking the investigation very seriously.”
Crime scene investigators have attended to examine the scene with Mount Gambier police asking anyone with information on the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
