Pony tails for breast cancer

FUNDRAISER: Yahl resident Jorja Glynn will raise money for breast cancer in memory of her grandmother this week with a fundraiser at the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club.

AT only eight years old, Yahl resident Jorja Glynn will this week generously cut her long locks as she raises money and awareness of breast cancer.

Having never met her grandma angel (Helen Glynn) – who sadly lost her to the terrible disease in 2004 – the brave young girl has decided to take matters into her own hands and help those currently going through the cancer journey.

Wanting to make the cut for a number of years, Jorja said she knows now is the right time.

“I wanted to wait so I could understand what I was actually doing it for,” she said.

Filled with pride, mother Jodie Glynn said it will be a special moment for her daughter, who is determined to generate change.

“I am very proud of her, she definitely does not like the cancer word so she wants to raise money to help,” she said.

“A family friend’s daughter will cut Jorja’s hair, which is even more special because she knew Helen when she was alive.”

Paying tribute to Helen’s involvement with the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club, the event will be held at the club’s next meeting at the showgrounds.

“We have a long family tradition of harness racing – Helen was heavily involved with the trots, the kids have horses and my father-in-law trains them, so it seemed like the right place to have it,” Ms Glynn said.

“That is where the ponytails, horses and pink angels came into the title of the event – Ponytails for Pink Angels.”

Already raising around $450, Jorja is well on her way to beating her target of $500 with raffle tickets and a wide range of prizes available on the night.

“We are very grateful for the support of local businesses who have donated prizes for the fundraiser and the many donations made so far,” Ms Glynn said.

“Hopefully we will get a good turnout on the night and raise even more money – the more the merrier.”

The fundraiser will take place on Friday at the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club meeting at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds, with the hair cut at around 7.15pm.

All funds raised will go directly to assist the Breast Cancer Network Australia to help Australians personally affected by breast cancer.

Raffle tickets can be purchased before the event at Yahl Primary School, Bev’s Salon, The Produce Store, Horseland and the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club.
