Golf: Williams denies Bates a maiden championship

BLUE LAKE GOLF CLUB A GRADE CHAMPION: Anthony Williams.

THE finals of the Blue Lake Golf Club Championships were played last Sunday and some new names were etched into history.

The A Grade match saw two-time club champion Anthony Williams up against Tim Bates who has been knocking on the door over the years for a maiden championship victory.

Going into the match Williams was a hot favourite and he backed up this claim by winning the first three holes.

To Bates’ credit he pegged back the deficit at the turn to level the match and they started the back nine all square.

Bates started the outward nine with a win on the par four, 10th hole to go one up in the match, but it was Williams who settled and took a lead of two-up into lunch with 18 holes remaining.

After the lunch break Williams asserted his authority on the match, reeling off multiple birdies and showing why his is known as one of the best golfers in the Limestone Coast.

In the end he coasted to the line for a 9/7 victory against a gallant Bates, who claimed some good scalps to make it to the final, including former club champion Trevor Little and former Wayne Scutter Memorial winner Setio Shanahan.

In B Grade it was Trevor Calliss up against Col Tester, with the pair attempting to claim their first respective club championships.

The match turned out to be an even contest as after 18 holes the pair went into lunch all square.

After lunch they continued the tight tussle, but it was Calliss who broke clear to take the match 4/3 and claim the title.

C Grade saw two in-form players in the club take their place in the final with Brian Vawser up against new member Adam Jones, but it was Vawser who laid the foundations for the win as he turned six-up after 18 holes.

Jones tried valiantly to pull back the margin but ran out of holes to go down 5/4 and hand Vawser his maiden title.
