Motorcyclists gear up for annual South East toy run

RUMBLE ALL THE WAY: Ulysses Limestone Coast riders will roar into town for the annual Limestone Coast Toy Run this Saturday. Father Christmas and his band of leather-clad helpers will assemble at The Rail from 11.30am. Picture: BRITTANY DENTON

HUNDREDS of jolly men and women in leather will bring Christmas gifts for those in need as they roar into town on motorcycles, scooters and side cars this weekend.

Riders will depart from Penola on Saturday morning for the annual Limestone Coast Toy Run, collecting donations and gifts for families in need at Christmas time, which will later be distributed by St Vincent de Paul.

The event is organised by the Ulysses Limestone Coast Committee with the support of local police and the State Emergency Service.

“Thanks to great support from Mount Gambier City Council, we have changed the venue for the final assembly point to The Rail this year,” toy run committee member Rory McEwen said.

“This new venue will allow riders to better display their machines and make it easier for the public to join us.”

Riders can either meet at the Shell service station in Penola, departing for Mount Gambier at 10.30am, or meet at the Mount Gambier Marketplace and depart for The Rail at 11.30am.

Mr McEwen said the route had been changed slightly this year.

“So spectators are aware, riders will travel south on Penola Road from the Marketplace, right onto Jubilee Highway at McDonald’s, left into Wehl Street and through to Margaret Street.

“Riders will enter the railway lands from the south and park on the paved surface.

“For motorcycle lovers young and old, this is a great opportunity to mingle with the riders and support St Vinnies.”

Families are invited to view the motorcycles at the railway precinct from 11.30am until 12.30pm.

A barbecue lunch and soft drinks will be provided by the Lions Club of Mount Gambier and coffee will be available at The Dining Car cafe.
