Community stands together against domestic violence

RAISING AWARENESS: Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chairperson Sonya Mezinec encourages people to help support violence against women and attend the free community breakfast for White Ribbon Day at Frew Park tomorrow.

THE prevalence of domestic violence in the region and the need to make a stand against it will be highlighted this week at a special White Ribbon Day breakfast at Frew Park.

Held annually by the Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group (FVAG) since 2011, the event recognises the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Marking the start of 16 days of activism against gender violence, FVAG chairperson Sonya Mezinec said it was an opportunity to keep the issue at the forefront of people’s minds.

“One in three Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime,” she said.

“The problem is not going away and is prevalent in our own community.

“We know that it is not all men, but it is still a big problem and it is important for people to question certain beliefs that lead to those violent behaviours.”

Open to the public, Ms Mezinec encouraged anyone to attend and help support an end to violence against women.

“It is about changing people’s attitudes and highlighting the issue around respect for women and how that starts with children,” she said.

“Communities play an important role in creating positive change so come along, enjoy a freshly cooked hot breakfast and support our goal to work towards the prevention of violence against women in the community.”

The breakfast will take place tomorrow from 7.30am to 9.30am at Frew Park, with free eggs, bacon, sausages, juice and coffee.

Women in need of support in the local community can call the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service on 8723 1385 or free call 1800 631 385.
